Tony Thurmond, the effective and popular and now former California 15th District Assemblyman, came from behind to win the race for California State Superintendent of Public Instruction over Marshall Tuck.
The race between Thurmond and Tuck was billed as Northern California vs. Southern California, but it was more a tussle of private versus public education ideologies – charter schools versus public schools. The public sector won with Tony Thurmond.
And with that, came a number of tweets of joy, many from Oaklanders like former Oakland Mayor Jean Quan…
The #CA #SuperintendentofSchools race got less media but was called 4 #Assemby Rep #TonyThurmond #AB15 #Oakland #Richmond 1.6% /155,545 #votes ahead. Congrats to @TonyThurmond CA’s next Superintendent of Public Instruction! Never underestimate the power of public school educators to do what’s right – even when faced with lots of $ from billionaires and corporate interests trying to elect his opponent. #TeamTony #WeAreCTA
