Oakland OUSD Holding First Ceremony Honoring High Achieving Middle Eastern Students

Oakland, CA – On Saturday, April 6, the Oakland OUSD Office of Equity Middle Eastern Student Achievement (MESA) Initiative will honor 230 Middle Eastern students in grades 6 through 12 who have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher and who are on track to attend college.

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” – Malcolm X

This is a major community celebration in Oakland. “The Middle Eastern Student Honor Roll recognition is a great incentive for me as a student. It instills pride and a desire to continue doing well in school,” said Bothinah Algaradi, current Middle Eastern Honor Roll student at West Oakland Middle School.

All students with 3.0 and above will receive certificates celebrating their tenacity in maintaining a high level of achievement throughout their middle and high school years. Of the 230 students being recognized, 46 have GPAs of 4.0 or higher. Those students will receive additional recognition from California Assemblymember Rob Bonta.

A number of leaders including OUSD School Board Director Jumoke Hinton Hodge, dedicated Oakland community members and school principals will take part in this event, awarding certificates to each student.
