I have been told by two sources that Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf was approached by Oakland Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick, who asked for a raise as per her contract. Mayor Schaaf refused her request. The Chief balked, and threatened to resign, so Mayor Schaaf asked her to do so. If true, This will end a short but controversial stint as head cop for Oakland, and the City’s first female police chief.
Oakland At-Large Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan had this to say “The chaos in this mayoral administration is hurting Oakland. We’ve lost so many key leaders that vital needs for our public are not being handled.”
However, some would see the Mayor’s reported action as the termination of a police chief not popular with the public.
As an update, I just received a call from Mayor Schaaf, who said that the story was “a fabrication by her political opponents two days before the election.” Indeed, Mayor Schaaf points to mailers sent out about her that are “just plain lies”.
