Oakland Measure AA Update: Oakland Council President Rebecca Kaplan Has New Proposal

Oakland Measure AA, a parcel tax that would have put a $198 fee on each property to fund education programs, was finally defeated.

Originally, the Oakland Measure AA Tax failed to land the 2/3rds majority vote the law requires, getting 62 percent instead.

The City Council for the most part, led by the Mayor Of Oakland, worked to push the tax through on December 14th, 2018, only to be slowed by a lawsuit filed by the Oakland Jobs and Housing Coalition.

Oakland Council President Kaplan drafted a substitute motion that would create a kind of review and waiting period while the court outcome was observed and then the City Council would come back and decide on a new and legal way to gain revenue for education programs.
