Oakland CA – Martin Luther King Jr. Day, his January 21st birthday, was made a national Federal holiday, and then in 1994, a national day of service. How did Oakland celebrate Dr. King’s birthday? I took a walk around social media, to learn the answer to that question.

The #ReclaimMLK Movement at Oakland City Hall

Oakland City Hall is the backdrop for the message of the #ReclaimMLK movement, led by former Oakland Mayoral Election Candidate Cat Brooks.

The #ReclaimMLK event at Oakland City Hall started at 11 AM today, and is still going on as this is written. But, to be sure, #ReclaimMLK is not Oakland-based, but a nationwide effort that started several years ago.

According to a 2015 Huffington Post entry by Lilly Workneh, Ferguson Action at, described as a grassroots civil rights organization that was formed out of the horror of the police murder of Michael Brown, called for the celebrations and demonstrations that year to be tied to work activists did to draw attention to racial inequality and police brutality.
