Lakeside Chat #7, features Sean Sommeran, Executive Director and operator of the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation.

The word ‘Pelagic’ is a Greek word for the open ocean and the mission of Sean Sommeran and PSRF is to assist projects that contribute to a better understanding of sharks, rays, and other members of the elasmobranchs’ family – cartilaginous fishes that have five to seven lateral to ventral gill openings on each side which includes sharks, rays, skates, and other related extinct fishes.

Sharks as a group have remained essentially unchanged in form and function for hundreds of millions of years. Sharks exhibit a remarkable variety of highly specialized characteristics, such as a keen sense of smell, and an unusual blood chemistry, among many other unique adaptations. Most sharks are predators, and usually exist at, or close to the apex of their food chains. As such, they are important indicator species in examining marine ecosystems as a whole, and may be important in regulating other species’ densities.

Sean will share fascinating information about sharks and rays, discussing their roles, adaptations, and behavior in our eco-system and some of the current issues and challenges facing these remarkable creatures.
