Former Oakland City Council D4 Candidate Chris Young Endorses Charlie Michelson

(Last Updated On: August 30, 2018)

On Tuesday, former candidate Chris Young formally endorsed Charlie Michelson to represent District 4 on the Oakland City Council at a campaign event in Montclair. Young withdrew from the City Council District 4 race in late July and joins the growing list of elected, business, and community leaders who have now thrown their support behind Michelson.

“I’m proud to get behind Charlie,” announced Young in a speech to community leaders and campaign supporters from across Oakland, “We need someone from the outside to go in there and to shake things up a bit. Charlie is that guy. I can’t think of a better candidate out there than Charlie to lead Oakland into a new tomorrow.”

“I admire Chris’s dedication to our country, to our state, and to Oakland, and I am humbled to receive his support,” wrote Charlie in an email to supporters, “From his work on criminal justice reform in the Obama Justice Department, to his work on the Oakland Ethics Commission holding government accountable, Chris has demonstrated a commitment to public service that’s inspiring.”

The announcement comes on the heels of other key endorsements for Charlie Michelson’s campaign in the District 4 race, including Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Oakland Vice Mayor and District 4 Councilmember Annie Campbell Washington, former Oakland City Council President Pat Kernighan, former Oakland City Councilmember Dick Spees, former NAACP National President and current candidate for Governor of Maryland Ben Jealous, Founder and CEO of Outdoor Afro, Rue Mapp, Executive director of Children’s Fairyland, C.J. Hirschfield, and the Alameda County Building and Construction Trades Council [2nd place].

ABOUT CHARLIE MICHELSON

Oakland is in Charlie Michelson’s DNA. He’s a third generation Oaklander, born and raised here in District 4, with a deep understanding of the city and the people in it.

Charlie’s parents met as young reporters at the Oakland Tribune in 1964. He grew up in a house on Sherwood Drive and attended Thornhill Elementary, Montera Middle School, and Skyline High School. When Charlie was young, his parents divorced, his mom came out as a lesbian, and he was raised by her—a single parent—at a time when LGBTQ rights were not widely accepted.

After college, Charlie came back home and worked his way up at West Cost Ship Supply in West Oakland. Eventually, he took over the company, expanding the business during tough economic times. With his progressive entrepreneurial spirit, Charlie implemented sustainable and labor-friendly practices, and created hundreds of local jobs over 25 years, all while keeping corporate headquarters here in Oakland.

As both a board member for the East Bay Agency for Children and the Oakland Feather River Family Camp Board, Charlie dedicated his time to improving Oakland-based youth services, including trauma counseling, and increasing outdoor recreational opportunities for underserved Oakland youth. Additionally, as a supporter and funder of Oakland Promise since its inception, Charlie is proud to provide scholarships to disadvantaged Oakland youth to attend the University of California.
