News from: Oakland Police Department

July 13, 2020

Denver, Chicago, New Orleans, and Nashville are just a few of the nation’s major cities that are experiencing a spike in shootings and homicides. In the first six months of 2020, there were more than 180 reported assaults with a firearm in Oakland, up 34% year to date.

The Oakland Police Department relies on our community members to call 911 and report gunfire. However, roughly 86% of shootings in Oakland go unreported. A major reason OPD utilizes ShotSpotter technology in more than 16 square miles of the city. Less than 30 seconds after the first fired shot, ShotSpotter pinpoints the location and alerts OPD’s Communications Division and Police Officers of an active gunfire scene.

So far this year, there are more than 2,600 ShotSpotter activations in Oakland. A 24% increase over the same time last year. In 2019, there were more than 10 gunfire incidents on an average day in Oakland, with more than 50 shots fired recorded by ShotSpotter.

We ask our community to partner with the Department and the City to reduce violence by helping to provide information: “If you know something, say something.” If you were a witness or have information regarding a crime, you can remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers of Oakland TIP LINE (510) 777-8572.

Stay tuned.

Note from Zennie62Media and Oakland News Now: this video-blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media , Inc. mobile media video-blogging system network that was launched June 2018. This is a major part of Zennie62Media , Inc.’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a vlogger with the Zennie62 on YouTube Partner Channel, then uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and owned social media pages. The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
