ONN – Hey Harold Lowe In Oakland, Google Trends Helped Understand Mayoral Election

Harold Lowe is an Oaklander who responded to my post on Google Trends and the Oakland Mayoral Election with this:

“The trending indicated something else; that people knew who Mayor Schaff was (and perhaps some of the other candidates), but did not know Brooks. Looking up someone is an indication of interest, not support. If Kamala Harris, for example only, is the Democratic front runner against Trump in 2020, we should expect to see the same jump, as polls indicated that fewer than 1% of the electorate knew who she was before she began questioning Kavanaugh at the SCOTUS hearings. I bet if you check the google and other search engine feeds around that time in September, I suspect that she would have a similar spike as compared to other Senators.”

My feeling is that Google Trends is better at state and national election predictions, and showing local interest. Overall, it’s a useful tool, but for a local race, it still comes down to knocking on doors and getting voters to the polls.

Stay tuned.
