As we come to the close of 2018, we say congratulations to Oakland’s Laney Community College. Laney College thrashed the Ventura College Pirates 40 to 35 to win the 2018 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Football Championship.
Laney College is coached by legendary former Skyline High School Head Coach John Beam. At Skyline (where this blogger attended high school in Oakland), Coach Beam had 15 league championships, 11 section championships, 4 undefeated seasons, and went undefeated in league play through the 1990’s, picking up the tradition set by Coach Tony Fardella in the 70s. Coach John Beam boasted a 160-33-3 overall record during his time at Skyline High School.
After working his way up the coaching ladder to Offensive Coordinator in 2005, Coach Beam was named head coach of Laney in 2012.
This year, The Eagles won their first ever California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Football Championship, meaning Laney has the #1 football team of all community colleges in California. Coach Beam told the Laney College Blog “I was so excited and proud for my players and alumni on Saturday. Winning a state championship is just so unbelievable,” said Athletics Director John Beam. “This championship shows that hard work and dedication pay off. This achievement lets world know Laney works for its students.”
