“Black Panther”, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”: 20 Movies Advance In Oscars Visual Effects Race

The record-setting, path-breaking movie Black Panther and the jaw-dropping Mission: Impossible – Fallout are two of the 20 movies that have advanced in the race for Oscar: Visual Effects for the the 91st Academy Awards. Here’s the full list:

Incredibles 2
Isle of Dogs
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Mary Poppins Returns

Paddington 2
A Quiet Place
Ready Player One
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Welcome to Marwen

Some of the films on the list have not been released in theaters, but have been screened by Academy Members already: Welcome to Marwen is to be released this Friday as is Aquaman and Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns hits the screen Christmas Day.

The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the preliminary list of films eligible for further awards consideration. Later this month, the committee will select a shortlist of 10 films that will advance to nominations voting.

Nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.
