ONN – Oakland Merchants Parking Garage Replaced By 40-Story Residential Tower At 14th & Franklin
It costs $200 million and will be the tallest residential structure in Oakland when it’s finished.
The Carmel Partners Development would include more than 16,500 square feet of retail space at street level and 634 market-rate housing units, at up to 400 feet. Oakland City Planning Commission officials gave the project would a waiver of the current height limit of 275 feet.
The building it replaces, Merchants Parking Garage, was long a symbol of the fact that institutional investor racism caused Oakland to be skipped over for high-rise development for decades.
For many of the same reasons The Golden State Warriors did not call themselves the “Oakland Warriors”, Oakland failed to land developers willing to build tall residential structures. Now, that’s changed.
