Dr. Kyla Johnson-Trammell, The Superintendent of The Oakland Unified School District, issued a newsletter and YouTube video statement, presenting an update on the “potential teacher strike.” What follows is the video, and transcript from it.

Oakland Teachers’ Strike Update from OUSD – Thursday, February 21st, 2019.

Greetings Oakland Community:

Facing a potential teacher strike is difficult for all of us. We support teachers advocating for better working conditions for themselves and improved educational outcomes for our students.

Today, we received the fact finding report, which is part of the process aimed at resolving the labor issue and preventing a strike. We are hoping the teacher’s union will now accept our invitation to meet at the table to discuss solutions and reach an agreement.

We are encouraged by the findings of the neutral fact finding chairperson. The report addresses the three primary issues raised by our union:
higher pay
smaller class sizes
more student supports

We are committed to following the collective bargaining process, in good faith, with the hope of reaching an agreement and averting a strike.

Unfortunately, a strike might happen before the community can see the report.

However, I have reviewed it in depth, and overall, we are pleased with the recommendations and find it to be a solid foundation for returning to the bargaining table.

We encourage everyone in the Oakland community to hold tight to our district-wide value of putting Students First.

The District is working to reach an agreement with the teachers’ union that honors our teachers, while also ensuring our financial stability today, and for years to come.

We are all doing what we believe is best for Oakland students. Let’s remember that.
